Create maps, charts, graphics and illustrations for print in newspapers in the GateHouse Media chain, from Massachusetts to Oregon and from Illinois to Florida.
Work in Illustrator and Photoshop and LibreOffice.

Journal Media Group's Central Desk,
Corpus Christi, Texas
I created graphics for seven newspapers in the Gannett newspaper chain (formerly Journal Media Group and formerly part of Scripps Newspapers); four in Texas, two in California and one in Washington. Work include maps, charts, infographics, logos, columnist identities and illustrations. Awards include a 4th Quarter 2014 "Best of Scripps" watchdog journalism award (for work that was part of a special section for the San Angelo (Texas) Standard-Times on the booming oil business that is driven by "fracking" drilling techniques), 2nd Quarter 2015 "Best of Journal" presentation award (for a graphics-intensive 1A package for the Redding (Calif.) Searchlight about city financial data, and a 3rd Quarter 2015 "Best of Journal" award for full-page graphics made available to the entire chain depicting Pope Francis' visit to the U.S.

As designer of newspaper pages, primarily in business sections, I constructed pages that assembled articles, images and information elements into a clean, dynamic whole. I coordinated with editors, reporters, photographers, graphic artists and copy editors to ensure we met daily production deadlines. I designed pages for 15 years. The pagination system was based on InDesign and I used Photoshop to create photo illustrations.
As a graphics artist and then graphics director, I created graphics and illustrations and was director of a four- and five-member team. As graphic artist I used both traditional methods (wet and dry media) and digital methods (FreeHand, Illustrator, Ray Dream) for illustrations. During my tenure, we transformed from using traditional technical pen, border tape and typesetting paste ups to digital, Macintosh-created locator maps, charts, graphs, and informational graphics. I created graphics for 11 years and also managed the department for nine of those. That included helping set budgets and performing employee evaluations.

The Mesa Tribune, Arizona
As the first staff artist at this daily suburban Phoenix newspaper, I did many things: I created maps, charts and graphs with phototypesetting, border tape, PMTs and technical pens; I illustrated using variety of traditional media, including pen, ink, pastel and airbrush; I created cartoons for the editorial page during first year; and I designed some pages and wrote a few articles.

I designed, built and maintain a web site for artist Liz Hunt using Dreamweaver:,
I keep a Wordpress site: with more examples of my work.
